The greatest crooners of all time

We'll always have a place in our hearts for smooth-singing crooners. Decades ago, a number of charming men captivated audiences with their jazz-infused heartfelt singing. Crooning's popularity rose in the 1920s, when singers started to make the most of the new, dynamic range covered by microphones. Voices could be heard differently, and finer details picked up on. It's as if these singers were whispering sweet nothings in our ears. The style evolved over the years to incorporate more pop elements, as well as other music genres. And while many of the great ones are no longer among us, some contemporary singers are still carrying the flag for crooners. In this gallery, we travel to the bygone golden era when crooners dominated the charts and remember some of the greatest of all time. But we also show you there's still hope for the present and future! Ready? Click on!

Famous songs inspired by books

When it comes to literary references in other works of art, some are more overt than others. It is obvious to most, for example, that Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights' takes its inspiration from the Emily Brontë novel of the same name. Less obvious, however, is that Katy Perry's 'Firework' has its origins in Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road.' Intrigued? Check out this gallery to find out which famous songs were inspired by literature.

Teen saint Carlo Acutis set for September canonization

There are quite a few young saints recognized by the Catholic Church, but, until now, all of them died more than a century ago. That changed with an announcement in May 2024 from Pope Francis: Carlo Acutis was to become the first millennial saint. Born in London in 1991 and raised in Italy, Acutis was a tech-savvy teenager who used his digital skills to spread the Catholic faith. He died of leukemia in 2006 at just 15 years old, and requested to be buried in Assisi in tribute to St. Francis. Since then, thousands have visited his tomb, many convinced of his blessed status. After the Church confirmed two miracles attributed to him, Pope Leo XIV scheduled his canonization for September 7, 2025, alongside Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in 1925 at age 24. While Acutis’ life was short and peaceful, many young saints met truly harrowing ends. The Church has a long history of canonizing children and teens, some of whom were martyrs, others who endured deep suffering. In this gallery, you’ll discover the youngest saints in Catholic history, and the remarkable stories behind their sanctity. Click on to learn all about them.

Cover songs that missed the mark

Some songs are classics and should never be covered by another artist. Unfortunately, this doesn't stop other singers from trying. Over the years, musicians have chosen, for one reason or another, to do a cover of another artist's music. Whether to pay tribute or because they think they can do it better, the songs are recreated (with extremely mixed results). This gallery will name and shame over two dozen stars who tried and failed to recreate musical masterpieces. From the most recent 2024 Democratic National Convention cover by John Legend to the likes of Madonna and Duran Duran, not even the big stars are immune to the blunders sometimes associated with covering another's music. Curious about which artists' cover songs didn't succeed? Click through the gallery to find out.
